SAFE Haven For Cats (SHFC) is a no-kill shelter for cats located in the North Raleigh area of North Carolina. We are a unique community-based animal shelter. In addition to providing adoption services for cats and kittens in need of good homes, we also manage a foster program for animals requiring a little extra love and care. We further assist our community in providing feline spay and neuter services in connection with SAFE Care Feline Spay Neuter Clinic.

EVENT HISTORY

It All Started with a Book and a Cat Named Sheldon

In 1999, SHFC volunteer and Advisory Board Member Jackie Brown wrote and illustrated a book to benefit SAFE Haven For Cats, "Expecting A New Cat...". During that year, multiple book signing/adoption events were held across the Triangle.

The events manager at the Barnes & Noble store located in Cary, NC was so impressed with SHFC that she contacted Jackie and extended an invitation for the shelter to participate in the store's charity gift wrapping night. From that holiday season forward, SHFC has participated annually at multiple bookstores throughout the Triangle. Volunteer coordinator WRay Templeton is credited with making each year a fun and successful fundraising event.

In honor of the book's title character, Jackie and her husband Joe adopted a cat they named Sheldon (formerly Cousteau) from SHFC in 1999. Sheldon was one of three gray kittens (brothers) waiting for a new home. Sheldon and the Browns are now living happily in sunny Florida. (Along with a more recently adopted stray, but that's another story.)
