HOW FAR WE'VE COMEHistorySAFE Haven for Cats started quietly 15 summers ago with the rescue of 17 cats from a Raleigh Church. What started as a family project has now grown into one of the best loved animal rescue organizations in the Triangle. As many of you know, for the first five years, SAFE Haven was housed in a 500 square foot heated and air conditioned garage at the home of Pam Miller and Doug Eader (co-founders). In those 5 years over 350 cats were adopted! On October 9, 1999 the volunteers of SAFE Haven opened the first permanent no-kill shelter for cats in the Triangle on Garvey Drive. In 2001, the SAFE Care Feline Spay/Neuter Clinic opened (one day a week). This was a milestone at that time, as there was no permanent low cost clinic in Raleigh. March 2003 saw the next expansion, as the shelter moved into double the space. This new building allowed the SAFE Care Clinic to expand to five days a week and greatly improved the housing for the cats. One third of the cats were now housed in free-roaming colony rooms. In the next three years all the cats’ enclosures were replaced with beautiful new cages. MORE SPACE MEANS MORE SERVICESCats Benefit from Next Expansion
Most importantly, the SAFE Care Clinic will be utilizing the current space (further down on Garvey Drive) with their expansion. This will include building another surgery suite, hiring a second veterinarian and shooting for at least 3,500 sterilizations a year. Since the SAFE Care Clinic opened, almost 8,000 cats and kittens have been sterilized. Together, using a very conservative estimate, over 70,000 lives have been saved. The staff and volunteers will be working towards getting these two spaces ready to occupy in April and May. In February we hosted an introductory adoption event at the new shelter location called, Yes We Cat. |
