SAFE Haven For Cats (SHFC) is a no-kill shelter for cats located in the North Raleigh area of North Carolina. We are a unique community-based animal shelter. In addition to providing adoption services for cats and kittens in need of good homes, we also manage a foster program for animals requiring a little extra love and care. We further assist our community in providing feline spay and neuter services in connection with SAFE Care Feline Spay Neuter Clinic.

ADOPTION STATISTICS

Adoptions

SAFE Haven For Cats has found permanent homes for more than 4,000 cats and kittens since opening our no-kill shelter in 1994. Of the cats that enter or shelter, they are generally:

  • 55% Male
  • 45% Female
  • 72% Under 1 Year Old

In 2008, we found families for 415 cats.

Program Expansion

We are completing a major expansion of our adoption program. Thanks to your help we have added 15 "open adoption hours" per week for 2009. This new initiative could add another 500 successful adoptions per year.

4,000 Cats Adopted!

On Tuesday, March 10, Louise Tetreault made Chunky Boy the happiest kitty on earth!

4,000 Cat Adoption RaleighUnbeknownst to Louise, the staff was waiting to surprise her when she chose her new companion because this was the 4,000th adoption! She and Chunky got lots of goodies, too.

You can see the whole staff turned out to celebrate with Louise and Chunkers. From left to right, back: Jennifer Vail, Clinic Administrator, Dianne Barrett, Cat Caretaker/Adoption Counselor, Louise and Chunky, Jan Midden, Head Veterinary Assistant. Front row: Sherri Orner, Associate Director and Dr. Betsy Pethick, Medical Director.

Chunky came to us through a year long partnership SAFE Haven has with the Franklin County Humane Society and the Franklin County Animal Shelter. Chunky is one of over a hundred cats we have found homes for through this collaboration.

STERILIZATION STATISTICS

Sterilization

All cats adopted from SAFE Haven are sterilized prior to adoption and can never reproduce. Of all cats that come into our shelter, only 15% have already been spayed or neutered.

In 2008 we sterilized 1,500 cats. Our goal is 3,000 sterilizations a year. Your donations make it possible for every cat to be accepted at the clinic for sterilization – regardless of whether their owners can pay the already low fee or not.

RESCUES AND PARTNERSHIPS

Franklin County Animal Control

SAFE Haven For Cats has partnered with Franklin County Animal Control to save as many cats as possible from this area of the Triangle where, unfortunately, euthanasia rates are very high. To date we have saved over 100 cats.

Animal Hoarder in Wake County

After nearly six months of negotiation and determination over 60 animals were removed from a hoarder in Northern Wake County. The animals were rescued in five different “waves” throughout late 2007 and 2008. With your sponsorship, SAFE Haven saved 41 cats and two birds. In addition, we facilitated the rescue of 8 dogs, 8 goats, many ducks and chickens and one very grateful pot bellied pig. Opens in New WindowRead News & Observer article.

SPONSOR A CAT

Sponsor a special cat in need. For just $25 your name will be listed on the cat's enclosure, we'll email you the cat's photo and story, and you will be notified when the cat is adopted. More...
