We’re Making a Difference Together!

In the first quarter of 2021-2022, we’ve been able to make a big impact for the cats in need in our community. We found homes for 298 cats plus spayed/neutered 1,258 cats and dogs!

That continues the work you helped us make possible last year. In the last 12 months we:

  • Found homes for 941 cats and kittens through our adoption program
  • Sterilized almost 2,000 kitties in the SAFE Care Clinic
  • Completed our 12,000th adoption!
  • Began a partnership with our friends at the Purr Cup Café, Raleigh’s first and only cat café

Learn all about our work in our Annual Report.

The Scratching Post: September 2021

The Scratching Post: September 2021

Message from Pam Miller, Founder & President:

Dear SAFE Haven family,

With our expansion complete, we are embracing the current year with renewed dedication to lifesaving – thanks to you!

As you will read in this annual report, we have accomplished much in the past 12 months.

  • Found homes for 941 cats and kittens through our adoption program
  • Sterilized almost 2,000 kitties in the SAFE Care Clinic
  • Completed our 12,000th adoption! (See photo of Jaxin on page 4)
  • Began a partnership with our friends at the Purr Cup Café, Raleigh’s first and only cat café

This summer, we celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the SAFE Care Spay Neuter Clinic and the completion of 36,000 surgeries. Our ambitious goal this year alone will be 5,000 surgeries in our expanded facility. I know you will agree that spaying and neutering every cat (and dog) we can is the fastest and most effective way to reduce euthanasia in the Triangle.

And we are making great progress together. When I started in animal welfare 29 years ago, we were putting 17.5 million dogs and cats to sleep every year in the United States. Today that figure is under 500,000 per year. Still a lot, but so much progress! We are going in the right direction and faster than ever.

With our programs and services at SAFE Haven, last year, we helped people and animals in 24 North Carolina counties. Wake County is hovering at around a 10% euthanasia rate for cats. Some of our neighboring counties are as high as 68%. With your help, we can continue to help people in this part of the State, decrease unwanted births, and eliminate euthanasia of healthy animals once and for all!

With gratitude,

Pamela Miller
Founder & President

Maximize Your Giving

Almost a Record

We can’t believe it – we adopted 33 cats LAST Week! This is just one less than our record for a non-event week/day. Thank you to everyone who gave these kitties a home! Want to try and help us break our record? Meet the cats waiting for you.

Course Monitor Volunteers Needed

We are so grateful to the nOg Run Club for designating us as one of their charities! Please sign up at the links below to help out at one of the two upcoming races. Both take place at Raleigh Beer Garden, 614 Glenwood Avenue, in Downtown Raleigh.

St. Paddy’s 4 Miler – 8:45 am – 12:00 noon, Saturday, September 14, 2021 – nOg Run Club
Oktoberfest 4-Miler – 8:45 am – 12:00 noon, Saturday, October 9, 2021 – nOg Run Club

Email ginger@safehavenforcats.org to sign up or if you have any questions.

Whether you wear a kilt or lederhosen this is what you will be doing! Be sure to stay for live music and drinks too!

The city of Raleigh requires course monitors to be 21 years of age. The course monitors will meet at 8:45 am on race morning at the intersection of Johnson and West St. behind the Raleigh Beer Garden. At that time everyone will receive a map with their assigned position along the course as well as a bright yellow safety vest. After a safety talk with Raleigh Police Department, the volunteers will drive or walk to their assigned position. Course monitors will make sure cars do not turn on the course as well as contact the race committee if a participant is in need of medical assistance. Each will also have a course map and will help cars navigate around the closed roads. You will stay at your assigned position until the trail police car relieves you of your position. We will have a volunteer walk in front of the police car and collect the reflective vests.

Cat 101

What do you need to care for a cat? How can you help your kitty start off its life with you on the right paw? Cat ownership, especially for first-time owners, can be overwhelming but we’re here to help. Take a look at our Adoption Handouts & Videos page for do’s and don’t’s during the first week after adoption, how to introduce your new furry friend to your house and more.

The Cats Miss You!

Come say “Hi!” and find that purr-fect match. Meet the cats waiting for you here at SAFE Haven and then start planning your visit now.

Please note: In concert with CDC and NC DHHS recommendations, the organization is strengthening its mask policy due to the uptick in Delta variant cases. All public, including volunteers, will be asked to wear masks.

So Many Cats

We just hit our 12,000th adoption! Jeannine and her wonderful family are first-time cat owners who were happy to give Jaxin a fur-ever home. Both sons fell in love with Jaxin and he with them. Congratulations! Read some more Happy Tails.

During 2020-21, we adopted out 941 cats, 100 more than we did in 2019-20. How did we do it? With your help! Watch for our Annual Report in September to read all about our amazing lifesaving year.

Spay & Neuter Time

With more than 100,000 cats and dogs living without a home in the Triangle, how can we make a difference? By spaying and neutering our pets! Reducing the chance of unexpected litters can help reduce the number of homeless animals. Make an appointment for your cat or dog at the SAFE Care Spay/Neuter Clinic now.

Can You Help?

SAFE Haven is once again participating in events in the area! We need volunteers for the following events:

  • Apex PeakFest: Saturday, September 11th
  • Course Monitors for the St. Paddy’s 4-Miler*: Saturday, September 18th
  • Course Monitors for the Oktoberfest 4-Miler*: Saturday, October 9th

* SAFE Haven is the Charity for these races and some of the proceeds will come to the cats if we can have 10 volunteers at each race!

Email ginger@safehavenorcats.org if you would like more information about these events and if you can help!
